Mount Oliver is a hilltop borough of about 3,400 people (2020 census) about 3 miles west of the Monongahela River. It is completely surrounded by the city of Pittsburgh but has stayed its own borough for well over a century. Homes are close together, many of them older two- and three-story houses with steep front steps.

The land was first settled by John Ormsby, an officer under General Forbes, who named his settlement after his son Oliver. Mount Oliver incorporated as a borough in 1892, and when Pittsburgh annexed Knoxville and Carrick in 1927 it ended up fully surrounded by the city. Its residents fought off annexation in court and the borough remains independent. Students attend Pittsburgh Public Schools.
