Dormont was incorporated in 1909, the first independent municipality in the South Hills of Allegheny County. Its name comes from the French mont d’or, loosely ‘mountain of gold’. Growth took off after the streetcar tunnel and the Liberty Tunnels were built, and almost every side street is an avenue. Scott Road and McFarland Road are borough-line streets shared with Mt. Lebanon, and McNeilly Avenue borders the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Brookline.
